Thom, 44, was one of founders of Restaurant magazine and the 50 Best Restaurants in the World awards, and is a speaker, consultant and writer on food and drink and art and culture in the North of England. As CEO of Holden Media he owns and organises world class Northern events including the Northern Restaurant & Bar exhibition, the NRB Top 50 Powerlist, the NRB Debate, Buy Art Fair and The Manchester Contemporary.
Thom has recently been appointed as a trustee of Manchester Art Gallery, and is also a board member for Castlefield Gallery and Hospitality Action and an ambassador for MMU’s Hospitality Department. Previous board roles have included the British Food Trust, Urbis and the North-West Food Tourism Executive. As a consultant Thom also advises operators, developers, city councils and cultural institutions on engagement and marketing.
In addition, Thom judges national and regional awards and has reviewed for restaurant guides. He also speaks at hospitality conferences such as BDO’s Restaurant & Bar, Restaurant magazine’s R200, and the Institute of Hospitality’s Northern meetings, and guest lectures at MMU. Thom has written about Northern culture and gastronomy for Olive and the Guardian, as well as speaking on the subjects on BBC 1 Breakfast news and Radio 4.
Thom works closely with Action Against Hunger, and has also scooped several personal awards, including a Crain’s ’40 Under 40′ gong and Peer Index’s ‘Most Influential Mancunians on Twitter’, as well as being listed as one of PHA Media’s ‘Most Influential CEOs on Twitter’. Thom was crowned “Man of the Year” in the 2014 Downtown in Business Manchester awards, and in 2017 was named the Manchester Evening News ‘Cultural Icon’.”
