The third annual Greater Manchester Tourism Conference, will be held on Tuesday 2 October and is a must for your diary. The full day Conference promises to be one of the highlights of the year for Marketing Manchester members and stakeholders. Last year’s event at Emirates Old Trafford was rated very highly by delegates and we look forward to welcoming you all this year to a brand-new venue, the new Crowne Plaza & Staybridge Suites Manchester – Oxford Road.
We again promise a highly informative, participative and business focused day yet for all members of the tourism industry in Greater Manchester and the North.
The stimulating programme will include a collection of thought-provoking talks, interviews, workshops and presentations from high-profile speakers, looking at current developments and opportunities and the future direction of the sector with relevance for all businesses involved in the visitor economy.
The day will be hosted by Sheona Southern and Nick Brooks-Sykes for Marketing Manchester. Speakers confirmed so far include Sally Balcombe, Chief Executive of VisitBritain, Joanne Roney, Chief Executive of Manchester City Council, Burkhard Kieker, CEO of visitBerlin and Andrew Cowan, Chief Executive of Manchester Airport. We are delighted to announce that we will also be joined by Sue Biggs, Director General of the Royal Horticultural Society, who will be telling us all about the exciting new RHS Bridgewater garden.
Paul Bristow, Director, Strategic Partnerships at Arts Council England will be Chairing a Cultural Tourism panel joined by Dave Moutrey Director and Chief Executive, HOME and Director of Culture Manchester City Council; Helen Palmer, Co-Director Creative Tourist & Co-Director Palmer Squared; Chad McGitchie, Head of Visitor Teams, Manchester Museum & The Whitworth, University of Manchester ;and Fiona Gibson Business Director, Octagon Theatre Bolton.
There will also be a choice of workshops including an International distribution workshop with VisitBritain, a workshop looking at opportunities to work with The Factory led by Mark Ball Creative Director of MIF, and a close look at the emerging Business Tourism Strategy with Marketing Manchester.
The format for the day is as follows:
- Arrival from 8.45am with a full day’s programme until 4.30pm.
- The day includes refreshments on arrival, tea and coffee breaks throughout the day plus lunch and a drinks reception at 4.30pm.
- A full programme of high profile and engaging speakers, films, workshops, interviews, Q&A and panel sessions plus taster sessions introducing new tourism product for 2019/2020.
- Networking opportunities throughout the day including a drinks reception sponsored by the Manchester Hoteliers Association, to end the day.
- An opportunity to view the new Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites Manchester – Oxford Road which is opening this summer.

Greater Manchester Tourism Conference 2017
Last year’s conference was again a sell-out attended by over 150 delegates. With speakers including Steve Ridgeway (VisitBritain), Guy Hughes-Wilson (BBC) and Fedor Babkin (Google), as well as soap box sessions, panels and workshops, the 2017 conference built on the fantastic success of 2016 and offered a fascinating insight into the tourism industry.
